Becks May Get Capello Axe

David Beckham is set to miss out on his 100th England cap as Fabio Capello aims to make his mark on the England team.

Capello, renowned as a man who has little room for sentiment and the demands of big-name stars, looks set to axe the former England captain just one game short from a landmark 100th England appearance.

Beckham had been hoping to become only the fifth player to reach a century of caps but was facing a race against time to regain match fitness ahead of England’s friendly with Switzerland on February 6.

The 32-year-old has not played since LA Galaxy’s 4-1 friendly win against Wellington in New Zealand and saw his debut season in the MLS dogged by injuries but had teamed up with Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in an attempt to regain fitness ahead of Capello’s first game in charge of the national side.

But despite Beckham’s efforts, reports suggest that Capello, who dropped Beckham from the Real Madrid team last season, is using the forthcoming game against the Swiss to look to the future, with Shaun Wright-Phillips, David Bentley and Ashley Young all thought to be preferred by Capello.
