Fabio Capello has called upon Jermain Defoe for England’s friendly with Swtizerland on Wednesday after Gabriel Agbonlahor pulled out of the squad through injury.
Agbonlahor sustained a hamstring injury during Aston Villa’s 2-1 defeat at Fulham yesterday and the 21-year-old has been withdrawn from the squad for Capello’s first game in charge as England manager.
In his place comes Jermain Defoe. The striker, who made a transfer deadline-day switch from Tottenham to Portsmouth, is in line for his 27th international cap.
He joins fellow strikers Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch and Michael Owen, who ended his 455 minute goal-drought with a second-half strike for Newcastle in their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on Sunday.
There were no other withdrawals from Fabio Capello’s squad following the weekend’s Premier League games.
