Here at Capello Learn English, we’re obviously 100% behind the new England manager and supporting Fabio all the way to South Africa in 2010.

But we do have a bit of a soft spot for the other home nations and of course, Fabio Capello isn’t the only Italian taking charge of one of our sides ahead of the next World Cup.

Giovanni Trapattoni takes charge of the Republic of Ireland for the first time on Saturday as they face Serbia in a friendly clash at Croke Park, Dublin and, like Capello, he leads team who has fallen on hard times in recent months having failed to qualify for this summer’s European Championships.

Unlike Capello however, Trapattoni arrives with a confident grasp of the English language having already conducted several press conferences in English, although perhaps not as eloquently as people may have liked!

But whilst it’s all well and good for Trapattoni to speak English, here at Capello Learn English were wondering whether the new Ireland manager could speak Irish?

Whilst English may be the primary language in the Emerald Isle, Irish is taught to all school children across the Irish Sea and estimates suggest that it is the primary language of up to 20,000 people. On top of that, a recent census claimed that 1,656,790 consider themselves to be ‘competent’ speakers of the language.

Like in Wales, printed information and signage is regularly printed in two languages and visitors to Ireland will be aware of the dedicated Irish speaking television channel.
