Fabio Capello will be ready to face the music when he leads England out against Switzerland on February 6th, with the official England supporters band ready to lend their support to the new England manager.
Whilst Capello is brushing up on his English skills in time to give his first team-talk as national team boss, the official England supporters club brass band will be tuning up on their repertoire as they attempt to spur Capello’s team to glory.
The England supporters band have now become a regular fixture at England games across the world, with their music being heard at every home game and major tournament that England compete in.
But whilst Capello won’t expect to hear operatic renditions of ‘Nessun Dorma’ (the theme for Italia ‘90) or ‘Il Canto degli Italiani’ (the Italian national anthem) coming from the stands at Wembley, the England band will still be leading the crowd and lending their support to the Italian.
Band member Nigel Wood, who is also the band master for the Scarborough Salvation Army, was present at Wembley for Steve McLaren’s final game in charge against Croatia and says that the England band will be keep on playing for Capello’s first game.
Wood told the Scarborough Evening News; “The noise was deafening [against Croatia] for more or less the whole 90 minutes – the England band definitely played better than the team!”
And Wood, who admitted that he would have preferred Martin O’Neill for the role, confirmed that he, along with his ‘band-mates’ would still be playing for Capello regardless on February 6th and urging the team on to the World Cup in 2010 and beyond.
