Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act following an incident at a Newcastle hotel.

The former Newcastle, Tottenham and Lazio star, who has had a history of alcohol related problems, was approached by officers from Northumbria Police on Wednesday after earlier being called to a disturbance at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.”

“The man was detained under the Mental Health Act, and no-one was injured during the incident.”

It is the latest in a number of health problems for Gascoigne, capped 57 times for England. In 2005, he was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and last year underwent emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer after being taken ill as he was celebrating his 40th birthday.

He was also arrested that year for an alleged assault on a photographer outside a Liverpool hotel in 2005 although all charges against him were eventually dropped.

Gascoigne looked to be getting his career back on track later that year after being appointed as manager of Conference North side Kettering Town. However, Gascoigne lasted just 39 days in the role before being sacked by the club.
