Fabio Capello is set to make a number of “surprise” selections when he names his first England squad on Saturday, with several names in the mix for a call-up against Switzerland.
One name being heavily linked with Capello’s first England squad is that of Reading’s Dave Kitson. The 28-year-old is currently the top English goal-scorer in the Premier League with eight goals and, if selected, would become only the third Reading player to win an England cap.
Another name repeatedly mentioned for a call-up is that of Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor. The Villa striker will soon be ineligible for the U21 side and with Capello looking to the future, the Villa front man is a likely candidate for a call-up, as is team-mate Ashley Young.
However, reports suggest that David Beckham will not be invited to Fabio Capello’s first team-talk since he learnt to speak English, meaning that the LA Galaxy star may miss out on a landmark 100th international cap.
Fabio Capello will name his squad on Saturday ahead of the meeting with the Swiss which will be preceded by a minute’s silence on the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster in which eight Manchester United players were among 23 people killed in a crash at Munich airport.
