David Beckham could be set to boost his chances of being picked by Fabio Capello and win his 100th cap by joining Newcastle United on loan, according to newspaper reports.
The former England captain, who currently has 99 caps for the national side, has been training with Arsenal in an attempt to keep fit during the American MLS off-season although both parties, as well as Beckham’s club LA Galaxy, have dismissed the idea of the 32-year-old appearing on the field at the Emirates Stadium during his stay in the UK.
But it is thought that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has approached Beckham’s representatives about a potential loan move to Newcastle, which would see the former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger move to the North East to get match fitness which, in turn, could benefit Los Angeles and England manager Fabio Capello.
Beckham is currently under contract to Major League Soccer and is committed to another four years with Los Angeles Galaxy, making a permanent move extremely unlikely.
Beckham would win his 100th cap if selected by Capello for the game against Switzerland on February 6, making him only the fifth player in history to reach a century of England appearances.
England’s five most capped players:
1. Peter Shilton, 1970-1990 - Caps: 125 (Goals: 0)
2. Bobby Moore, 1962-1973 - Caps: 108 (Goals: 2)
3. Bobby Charlton, 1958-1970 - Caps: 106 (Goals: 49)
4. Billy Wright, 1946-1959 - Caps: 105 (Goals: 3)
5. David Beckham, 1996-Present - Caps: 99 (Goals: 17)
